Methods for Installing Dock Piling
The method you use to install your dock posts in water will depend on your shoreline conditions. Before choosing your materials, get to know your seafloor. Is it sandy, muddy, rocky? Depending on the conditions, you may need to rent some equipment. Here are a few ways to drive piling into your lakebed.
- Jetting – You can rent a water jetter that is equipped with a hose nozzle to force sand and silt away from the piling. As the jetter clears sand, you can guide your piling deeper into the seafloor.
- Hammering – You can also hammer the posts to drive the pile deep enough until it reaches stable soil or bedrock.
- Augering – A pipe auger can also be used to create holes for the dock posts. Some owners use PVC as a concrete mold for their dock piling.
Regardless of the method you use, be sure to talk to an experienced dock installer and dock hardware company to ensure you have the right measurements, tools and materials prior to getting started.
