Choosing the right materials for your dock comes down to a matter of preference in terms of aesthetics, maintenance, cost and longevity. With a wide variety of options available, it can be challenging to determine which materials are best suited for your needs.
Each material choice comes with its own set of advantages and disadvantages, and it’s important to weigh these factors carefully before making a decision. As you assess which dock materials are best for your custom dock installation, keep these pros and cons in mind.
Choosing the Right Dock Materials
Selecting the right material and hardware for your dock is an important decision that will affect its longevity, maintenance requirements, and overall appearance. There are two main categories you need to consider when it comes to dock materials.
- The type of decking you want,
- The type of dock hardware you need.
Common decking materials include wood, aluminum and composite materials, among others. Of these three categories, here are some things to consider:
- Wood – Wood is a popular choice for dock construction because of its natural appearance and affordability. However, it requires regular maintenance to prevent it from rotting and warping, and it may not be as durable as other materials. If you choose wood for your dock, make sure to stain and/or apply a waterproof sealant every few years.
- Aluminum – Aluminum is lightweight, durable and as hands-off as you want it to be. It’s also resistant to rotting and insects and can be painted or powder coated to give you the aesthetic you prefer. We frequently advocate for aluminum docks because of their durability and ease of maintenance, though aluminum docks can be more expensive than wood materials. The trade-off is a long-lasting dock that can withstand the toughest conditions.
- Composite – Composites are also popular decking materials and are made of a blend of plastic and wood fibers. They provide the appearance of wood without the same maintenance requirements. They are also resistant to rotting and insects and are highly durable. However, composite materials can be more expensive than other decking options.
At RDS Dock Hardware, our lightweight aluminum frames and dock hardware are strong enough to accept all the above-mentioned decking materials and more. Our aluminum frames can be purchased with or without decking to best accommodate your custom dock design.
