Just like any industry, the dock industry has its own set of vocabulary used to describe various parts of a dock. For those new to dock design, it can take a minute to familiarize yourself with the lingo. For example, those poles that hold up a dock? Yep, they have a name. They are called dock pilings, and they’re essential to any fixed dock or pier structure.

Dock Piling Explained

Dock pilings are the large poles or posts used to stabilize a dock, pier or any other structure built over water. Often, you’ll see them made out of wood, steel, fiberglass or concrete. Many residential lakefront homeowners opt for wood dock pilings when designing their custom dock as it matches the natural aesthetic of their surroundings. Rot-resistant woods are good choices if they can accommodate your height requirements.

Important to note is that as dock pilings become damaged, it’s imperative to repair or replace them promptly. Keep close tabs on your dock piling to ensure it remains in good condition. Some accessories you can consider to protect your dock posts and watercraft include dock piling bumpers, pile covers, sleeves or wraps, and dock piling caps.
