Frequently Asked Questions

Parts and sizing

What size pipe does RDS hardware fit?

Our 1-1/2" hardware fits standard 1-1/2" pipe, which has a 1.90" outside diameter. Our 2" hardware fits standard 2" pipe, which has a 2.375" (2-3/8") outside diameter. Measure the outside of your existing pipe to check.

Should I use 1-1/2" or 2" hardware?

Most people buy 1-1/2". In our experience it's plenty strong for most docks. Choose 2" for bigger docks, rough water or heavier boats.

Do I need a pipe base?

Use a pipe base where the lake bottom is soft. Set the base about a foot above the bottom of the pipe. For rocky bottoms, cut the pipe at a 45° angle so it seats itself into the rocks. Use a pipe auger when the bottom is full of vegetation and organic matter.

How long a piece of pipe should I buy?

Water depth plus 3 feet, at minimum.

How far do I drive the pipe in?

6 to 12 inches.

What length bolt do I need?

For our dock frames and standard two-by construction, use a 2-1/2" bolt with two flat washers, one lock washer and a nut.

How are the side brackets used?

At the start of the dock, at the end of the dock, or to join two dock frames. They attach to the outside of the frame.

What's the difference between the PLD012 and PLD017 clamp-on brackets?

The PLD017 was designed to protect pontoon boats; whether you need it depends on where your boat sits, so it doesn't rub against the clamp. Otherwise the PLD012 does the job.

Can I buy just the swivel?

Yes: the Universal Swivel (DL206).

What size cleat should I get?

8" is the most common. Our aluminum cleats suit light use like rowboats and canoes; our zinc alloy cleats are for when you need more strength.

Building and installing

When is cross-bracing needed?

  • When the distance from the bottom of the dock to the lake bottom is more than 6 feet
  • When the water is choppy
  • When you have a large boat
  • When your dock is longer than 40 feet

What do I do at the shore end?

Rest the dock on sand, cinder blocks or 4x4s; attach it to a bulkhead with a Deck Stand-Off Bracket (DSO094); or use pipe legs, side brackets and bases.

How do I attach a ramp?

Use a Floating Dock Connector (FDH029) or a Slotted Floating Dock Connector (FDH040).

Do I need to remove my dock in the winter?

Yes, in cold climates. Unless you run a bubbler, the force of the ice sheet can destroy dock components. See our winterizing guide.

Do you install docks?

We supply the hardware and help with parts lists; installation is done by you or your contractor.
